Simple Steps to Wellness

What is all the hype about wellness? What does it mean to have wellness, and do you need to be concerned? The days of thinking about your health from a medical care perspective only are fading fast. Yes, you heard me correctly! You have the ability to manage your health & wellness in a way that puts you in control. So, how do you achieve a wellness lifestyle?

The Definition of Wellness

A wellness lifestyle empowers you, and by doing so, you no longer need wait for illness and seek medical care. Wellness is determined by implementing habits that support your body and encourage optimum health. Prepare to shift your focus from waiting for the next sickness to living an intentional life that focuses on you maintaining a state of good physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

  • Drink fresh lemon juice (1/2 lemon) at the start of your day as this encourages detoxification.

Healthy Habits

Here’s where life will get fun for you! Wellness is all about putting optimum fuel into your body, and these habits can open your eyes to new and exciting foods that you never knew how to cook or you didn’t know were good to eat. Follow these steps:

  • Fill your grocery cart with organic foods

  • Eat lots of fresh fruits & vegetables (eat what is in season to save $$)

  • Drink plenty of water (8 glasses a day!)

  • Reduce meat intake as too much meat increases your body’s acidity (acidity = increased chance of illness)

You may be skeptical but focusing on positive vs negative feelings can help you stay healthy. Start using the following tips today! It’s never too late to change your attitude ☺

  • Start cancelling any and all negative thoughts. You know, self-talk. Instead of saying negative things about yourself or those around you, cancel the negative thoughts and ideas. Yes, say cancel when negativity enters your mind. You will feel better about yourself and others.

  • Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Here’s an easy example for you to try. When you feel like you can’t do anything right or all you ever do is make mistakes, try saying I am good at what I do and I learn from my mistakes. You may not believe it initially, but the more your practice, the better you will feel about yourself.

  • Instead of getting overwhelmed with stress, focus on the perfection of your life. List all the good things you have in your life and release your worry. Worrying doesn’t resolve issues; it creates negative energy and that can have a negative effect on your health.

Exercise

Sure, sure, you know you “should” be exercising, but you never seem to stick with it. What are you to do? Get creative and have fun! Follow these simple strategies to maintain a more active lifestyle. First, set a “reasonable” goal.

  • Take it slow and begin exercising two days a week and steadily increase until you maintain five days of exercise per week

  • Engage in exercise that appeals to your personality (ie, take exercise classes, join a walking group, go for a hike, or escape with a short run by yourself)

  • Set small time frames (ie. 10 minutes per day) and increase this time until you reach 30 minutes of exercise per day for five days a week

  • Do not give up! Once you begin your exercise schedule, stick to it no matter what. You will absolutely feel better physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Socialization

Humans are social creatures so YOU need be sure to embrace a healthy and active social life. No, you don’t need to become an action-packed, social butterfly but maintaining a well-rounded social life will leave you feeling better physically and emotionally. Be sure to interact with friends or family 30 minutes a day (not social media, talk to people and have relationships with them, and by all means go have fun!).

Sleep

Right now, you are probably thinking, “Oh, how I wish I had more sleep!) As adults, we need 7-9 hours of sleep per night and frequently, you only get 5-6 hours a night. Make your sleep a priority by using implementing these steps:

  • Start slowly reducing your electronic time (TV, Computer, Phone). Set reasonable goals and stick to it as often as possible.

  • Meditate before bed as this calms your mind, helps you release the day’s stress and is the perfect time for you to practice your gratitude.

  • Read an uplifting book or write in your journal 30 minutes before bed. The practice of this level of mindfulness will help your body relax and encourage a goodnight’s rest.
